I called Amazon about an older refurbished Kindle of some type a few years ago and asked about the battery. They don't put new batteries in them, according to the person I talked to unless the old ones are noticeably bad. I think they said something like 60% of expected life but I might remember that wrong.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a newish Kindle refurbished but for an older one I'd make sure refunds were easy just in case.

I have bought quite a few things from Woot over the years and I've never had a problem. It's been a while and I don't recall if any of them were refurbished. I tend to buy refurbished things only when they're very cheap. For a few dollars more I'll get something new.
