There are some arcane rules governing whether this works. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has ever pinned down exactly what they are, but one of them is that there needs to be a minimum number (maybe 3 or 4) of "unread" books in that Collection.
That't roughly what I have worked out. Except that it can be a collection, or author with only one unread book. And if you don't use a collection to open the book, the collection or author displayed tends to be one containing your current book. Or the previous book if there are no unread for that collection/author.

And for the record, series are not included in this. I've asked Kobo, but, it hasn't been done yet. The response was close to a moment.
