There are some arcane rules governing whether this works. Unfortunately I don't think anyone has ever pinned down exactly what they are, but one of them is that there needs to be a minimum number (maybe 3 or 4) of "unread" books in that Collection.
It's just enough to open the collection.

While that works to put a specific collection on the home screen, if you go into a different collection that fits the rules, you then lose the collection you had on the home screen.

So as to pinning, there's no way to do it. That's why I wouldn't even bother to try.
