Connect your Kobo to your computer, run ADE. In the left column, you should see Devices with KoboeReader under it. On the gearwheel dropdown, see if Authorize device is greyed out. If not click on it and authorize your Kobo. Once this is done, you can right click on an item in your library, Copy to computer/device and select KoboeReader.

My personal preference is to import non-library books into calibre stripping the DRM and using calibre to clean up the metadata, etc. before sending them to my Kobo. The not stripping DRM from library loans is a personal quirk -- I don't 'own' them so removing the DRM isn't right.
