For me, these Filter-Lists are helpful, but I sometimes want to read on a whim some particular subject. That's when I'd like to a stroll through my Collections. So for me, the more Collections I have, the more interesting. It seems you all are saying that I'm using it the wrong way. It seems this is because of the slowness of Collections. Maybe in a future generation of ereaders, when ereaders are as snappy as today's smartphones, you all won't discourage me from using Collections the way I do.

Perhaps you should fine tune your collections even more and end up with more collections than you have books. And I don't think it's due to the slowness of collections which has been speeded up in newer firmware, it's due to the slowness of scrolling through page after page of collections.
I do use a calibre generated catalog which includes authors, titles, series, publisher, publication date and descriptions which I export as an epub and import to my ereaders. I open that "book" and do a search for say, 3560 if I am looking for books about Cisco 3560 switches.
Right click on a book, click on Convert books, click on Create a catalog of the books in your calibre library. Set the options, click ok and wait a bit.
