The second story is famous as his fictional version of the mystery of the "Mary Celeste". Conan Doyle changed the name to "Marie Celeste", the captain's name from Briggs to Tibbs, and changed numerous other basic facts, many of which, including the ship's changed name, have become widely accepted "facts".
