This is why I chose "fixed length, renewable indefinitely". It keeps the mouse house happy, so that they don't keep trying to get the law changed, and it should stop orphaned works.
It does require that there be a searchable database of registered copyrights, but come on now...that's hardly a burden to maintain, and searching it could/should be accessible from the copyright office's website.
