I've not bothered with any patches on any of my Kobos. I use a Kobo Libra, sometimes 12 hours a day.
I find it best for Collections, Series and export Annotations. Creating collections on the Kindle is painful and doing it at all from Calibre only works easily if it's an ancient Kindle.
The highlighting used to be slower and more awkward than the Kindle PW3 but now is easier and faster, even on the old Kobo H2O original.
