Once the custom columns have been setup and all the hoops jumped through, those columns will be filled/updated when you connect your Kobo. Any comparisons, etc. are left up to the user.

The whole idea with the setup is to import the information into calibre from your Kobo. Once it is in calibre, you can see the information whether or not your ereader is connected or even still in existence.
