Really, I for one prefer the option of installing my reading app of choice, rather than being stuck with the stock reader. No matter how slickly-designed that stock reader is, it will be a 'one size fits all' solution, that will be an imperfect fit for many users.

One of my biggest complaints is not about Onyx's software but the whole idea of android on a 16 grays e-ink device. Android doesn't know about grayscale and all of the android apps assume the display is at least 256 colors. So you get confusing color combinations that work in color but in 16 grays map to two similar grays making it very hard to see what's what. But we're talking about a color display here so that shouldn't be a problem with this one.
1) The main apps being installed on e-Readers will likely be reading apps, most of which are optimised for e-Ink.

2) There exist curated-for-eInk app stores, such as Good eReader's, for example.

Speaking for myself, I really value being able to install my preferred reading and syncing apps through Android.
