Yes, not having access to brand new features is a risk you take when your hardware is over a decade old. It's not unique to any particular company. My old TV doesn't have all the newest smart TV features either.

The person who posted has a Kobo Glo, and so far as I know we've not yet hit any situation where "attempt to support newer firmware" has failed, have we? (And it's easily fixed if we do.)
