Magnetic sensor fault

Hi,

Im part way through fixing my daughters Paperwhite 7th Gen (PW3W) which gets stuck at the lock screen. Im an electronics engineer, so know my around a circuit board, but new to Kindle 'hacking', so please bear with me ...

Long story short, there was a touchscreen ribbon cable fault which I fixed, but the magnetic sensor area is also faulty. Press in the right way and the device comes out of lock screen.

Ive tried re-flowing the three components (Hall Sensor, resistor and ceramic capacitor), but no joy. The ceramic capacitor may have a loose end cap, but it could equally be a track fracture. The Hall Effect sensor is labelled "BP33D", which I cant find listed anywhere. Im tempted to short the sensor, but its very tricky to solder to these plastic ribbons.

So, Id like to try and disable the Hall Effect sensor in software and would be grateful for some basic pointers from the experts.

Does the Kindle needs to be jailbroken to apply your mod'? I can see there is masses of (sometimes unreliable or contradictory?) information around jailbreaking, so if you could point me to a reliable source, you could shorten my journey! My PW3W has firmware version 5.12.4.

Finally, could you point me to where I can find basic information for installing mods such as these.

Ill report back when I fix it ... and thanks in advance for your help (and patience!)

Kevin.
