If that doesn't work, I would get Amazon to replace it. Although it is strange that will will store the location properly since you can return to the correct location from the home page. But, perhaps that and current book or whatever are stored separately.

It may be that you "bookmark file" is corrupted for that book.
Try this -
Connect Kindle via USB to a PC/Mac.
Find the volume/drive on the desktop
look in the Documents folder
(view by list - it's easier)
find the book in question.
find the corresponding .mbp file (same basic name, different ending)
Remove the .mbp file (this will kill all your book marks, other annotations and "the last page read" data for that book)
Try to read again and see if LPR advances.

Note - I am almost 100% confident that there is neglible power savings betweeen "sleep" (so-called screen saver) and "off" (white screen).
Both should work fine though.
