For those who just buy from the Kobo store, like most people do from Amazon on the Kindle, there is no need for ANY of the three "hoops" you mention - the Kobo experience is exactly equivalent to the Kindle: Setup an account, buy a book, read. Those other services are additional and optional, not required. Let's compare apples with apples, not oranges.
