if your device library is on a slow SD card, could that be a factor ?

That would be me; indeed I have a large library on SD card and I have no speed issues, but consider:
- my e-reader is a Boyue Likebook Mars, an Android 6.0 e-ink tablet with 2Gbytes RAM and 1.42GHz Freescale RK3365 octa-core processor; not exactly a light weight in CPU terms and hardly a fair base for comparison with other e-readers
- I have organized (using Calibre options) my e-books files on the HC class 10 32 Gbytes micro SD card using recommended tree file as <about 40 directories each named with one letter using the author's first name initial>/<multiple subdirectories, one per author>/<ebook files, covers and opf files, all listed inside the same subdirectory of its author, no further subdirectories> . The template used by Calibre is {author[0]}/{author:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {author} (id)
It all adds up, so,
yea, indeed CC response time for search and filter is nearly
instantaneous... but then again I did paid good money (reader, card, software) to get there.
Kind regards,
