If you are doing many different genres and novels you need MULTIPLE dictionaries and ability to load any selection of them. Simply the one US or British English isn't good enough.
So I have 18th C English, 16th C English, English/British names, Irish names, Technical, Per series (fantasy or SF names, places, things, sometimes for one book), US English, British English, Irish (Gaelic), French, German.
You can edit the MS Word/LO Writer dictionaries directly with Notepad++ or KATE.
In LO Writer it's simple to mark blocks as being in a particular language or add a word to a specific dictionary while spelling checking.
Be sure you know the regional, dialect, technical and temporal contexts before assuming a word is a typo!
