Firstly, what do you mean by a "hard reset"? Is that powering off and on, pressing the pinhole reset button or doing a factory reset? Or something else? I ask because when people say they do this, they can mean different things and expect different results.
As to the freezing, it can mean different things. It could be that the database on the device became corrupted. Fixing is usually as simple as signing out of the Kobo account and back in. The simplest cause for this is not ejecting the device properly when connected to a PC. It seems to happen for other reasons, but, I've never tracked down any other consistent reasons.
If this is happening constantly, it could be a hardware issue. If the storage is failing, it can cause hangs and other problems such as corrupted databases. For devices with an internal SD card, such as the Aura Edition 2, replacing the card and restoring an image to the card will solve this. The SD card is the only replaceable part that could be causing these sort of issues. If it is anything else, you basically will need to replace the device.
