So apparently the short press screen refresh is not a default setting, as i erroneously assumed.

Verifying 'Settings > Buttons > Short press Eink button' i had set the fourth list entry (the third chinese one after None) checked. This probably does the trick.

I wish i'd be able to read and understand Chinese.
