If one were to ignore 'folders' and only do one page per 'story' (requiring users to use Anthologies for 'folders') it would be simpler to implement, but less harder to use.
I would speculate that the site began as an image site and added prose afterward; possibly on the same software as deviantart.

No, SoFurry was originally YiffStar, a story only site. I think it would be more than acceptable to have every "story" be single chapter, and have people use the anthology thing for folders if they want. First, many if not most stories, even long ones are oneshots, and second people also use that feature to group things that are definitely series or even stories along a theme.Which was actually one of my main concrns becuse their built-in epub download function only does a whole "series"at a time (folders are ordered and only for stories, so more of a series function)
What you;re describing actually sounds a lot more like Inkbunny and pools.
