Richwood--keeping wifi off on your reader 98% of the time won't prevent Amazon from knowing exactly what you're doing on your device. Anytime you directly connect to Amazon with your reader (to download purchases or firmware) your activities will be uploaded to Amazon as part of the process. The only way to prevent this from happening is to never connect to Amazon with your readers. When I first receive my Kindles, I connect to Amazon to register my devices, then they are placed permanently in airplane mode. I transfer all my books and new firmware (when I decide I want to upgrade) via USB.
