But calibre is not the only way to move files from a desktop/laptop computer to an ereader, pretty sure the ereader suppliers (Kindle, Kobo etc) have Windows and Mac apps that can do the basics - not sure about Linux.

There is no need of any app: simply put the book into the ereader using the normal file manager of Your OS. I own a Kindle and a Kobo, but I am pretty sure that all ereaders will do the same. When You expel it the book will appear.
About apps: Kobo Desktop (not available for Linux) has the main purpose of synchronization and You can buy books from there. Works with the books You bought from Kobo. And I don't know any Kindle app to put books in Your Kindle but You can send them to Amazon by email as personal documents.
But if You use calibre to organize Your library then You naturally use it also for putting the books on the ereader. With Kobo - and many other non Kindle ereaders - You could also use ADE but calibre is much better (and works on Linux without needing Wine) so I use it only for borrowed books with DRM using the Windows partition of my dual boot PC.
