I don't use ereaders as such, they're also too elaborate for this simple soul . I use Android devices, including a Boyue e-ink - if I could find one I'd use an e-ink Windows device. I only keep what I'm currently reading on my devices, usually 2-3 'books', I also keep a couple of reference texts.
But calibre is not the only way to move files from a desktop/laptop computer to an ereader, pretty sure the ereader suppliers (Kindle, Kobo etc) have Windows and Mac apps that can do the basics - not sure about Linux.
