Book, file - yes I think there is a difference. Sorry about that.
Tried Recuva - not only didn't it find any of those specific files, it didn't find a file at all !
It is now pretty certain this was not a fault of the calibre software but some idiocy of my own. I appreciate all the help from here that made my realise that.
I guess I have to accept my losses and move on.
