VL's are just subsets of the main. They are defined by creating a (saved ) search or 2, then creating the VL from the terms. (not a click books, and presto, it is a VL)
IMHO The usual reason for using a VL it yo be able to perform additional tasks that would normal be applied to the whole Library.
If you are just doing a simple search: eg not #read: true to see a selection of books to choose from, then a Saved search may do your task (this example may be better handled by the Reading List Plugin, as it offers priority ordering)
