Yes, the reader is authorized with Adobe.
If you are borrowing the books using the ereader, then it means that Adobe (ADE or Adobe authorization) is not involved. The books actually come from the Kobo store. If they have DRM, it is Kobo's DRM.

Problems like this are usually fixed by removing the book and downloading again, or using the repair. Another way is to use the "Remove from My Books" when removing the book. Then go into your library in the Kobo store, choose the Archive and restore the book from there. On the next sync, there will be a complete download of the book including all the metadata.

If this doesn't fix it, then it is likely that the database on the device is corrupt. Are you seeing any other problem? Such as the current location or status for a book reverting to an old status? This is usually a sign of a corrupt database. You can check it with any SQLite database management tool, or if you are a calibre user, my Kobo Utilities plugin.

If it is a corrupt database, unless you have a recent backup, you will need to sign out of the Kobo account on the device and back in. Unfortunately, you will lose the reading status for any sideloaded books. And for purchased books, the status will be downloaded from Kobo. Unless there is a problem with the book, this will should things.

If none of the above solves the problem, you will need to talk to Kobo about it.
