Starbucks doesn't seem to have taken off much over here apart from in Auckland where there is a fair bunch of them. Wellington has only one (and another in a satellite city in a mall), and in Christchurch there is only one (again in a mall).
I can't comment on Christchurch as I haven't been to the CBD there since the earthquake but I suspect in Wellington there is too much competition from the existing number of quite good independent cafes. Long may it stay that way.
