You could just abandon the whole USB method and use calibre companion. There is still a version in Amazon app store I think. That will talk to calibre over WiFi.
But test with the free demo version before buying, because there is no support from the apps new owner if you have issues. The demo has all the features of the paid for version except that it limits how many moons can be transferred. If, like me, you only keep a few current reads on the tablet and keep everything else in calibre, that may be all you need.
Or, if you have installed moon reader, that can connect directly to a calibre server called OdPs, or opds, and a forum Search will bring up how to set that up
