Some more information might help such as the name of the book you were trying to read, what type of ebook was it, etc.?

I've borrowed one epub3 from the local library which has issues since it was an epub3 fixed layout with embedded audio and video (a children's book for one of my great nieces). When I looked at the fine print, it didn't list ereader as a supported device. It did work happily in the Kobo app on an iPad.
