Normally one would just spray the oxalic solution lightly on and leave it for a while and wipe off. For difficult surfaces such as undersides of ss benches etc. or vertical or overhanging surfaces where staining is bad and longer term contact is desired one would thicken it. That is just an expansion of what I posted before.
