In general, you need to make sure you have the latest hotfix before you update kindle firmware. In addition, kindle firmware greater than or equal to 5.11 is increasingly hostile to jailbreak and you need to carefully decide which version has must need features and acceptable risks.

After any firmware change, all applications such as koreader and KUAL have to be reinstalled.

Also, you have more control adding new firmware over USB instead of wi-fi.
