Neither the footnote popup nor the in-page footnotes are working out for you?

Document settings (document icon) → Style tweaks → Miscellaneous → In-page footnotes
Settings (gear icon) → Taps & gestures → Links → Show footnotes in popup

(I think one of those should probably be enabled by default; my personal preference goes to in-page footnotes.)
