...in 1774 The House of Lords ruled against perpetual copyright

An interesting case. There was debate about whether there was a pre-existing "common law copyright" i.e. a natural right. Whether they ruled that is unclear. What they definitely did rule is that if there were such a right, the Statute of Anne over ruled it.
