The digression into Apple's sins was amusing though AFAIR, Microsoft was responsible for RTF and Microsoft's implementation had some rather strange ways of embedding images.

However, since the OP had an RTF file and the images in a .RAR archive, this would suggest that it was either it was not created by TextEdit on a Mac or someone repackaged the .zip container file.
