My understanding is that Amazon has gotten more strict lately about requiring those large image sizes. (Others with more practical experience will likely comment. I don't publish books.)

Indeed, I can speak from first-hand knowledge; Amazon is
absolutely pushing publishers to adopt and use the guidelines stated for the "Great on Kindle" program--1200px wide for 100% width; 900px for 75% (and this is the size that they are targeting as "ideal" because they feel it's the size that works best on smartphones); 600px for 50% and 300px for 25%.
I know this because we've had publishers show up with "Kindle Quality Notices" (which infuriates me) about images that don't meet these "guidelines."
They also seem to have no sense of humor a'tall about odd sizes--sizes that are
not 25-50-75-100, by the way. As in, 60% width, or what-have-you.
We've been waiting for several MONTHS for an answer on odd-sized images.
The answer seems to be--SEEMS--that if your images are low-rez, or the wrong size, etc., you simply won't qualify for GOK (Great on Kindle). And you may have to go through the KQN dance, telling them that you can't fix this or that.
