I’ve been corrected by my sister. Apparently LMM had been ill and was exhausted, but her publisher pressured her to hurry the second book to print anyway - that’s why she was worried it wasn’t good enough.

That’s interesting; I wonder if she faced any pressure to have Jo marry Laurie? That would have been the usual path of things.
