It won't affect the ereaders very much. When they try to get to the Kobo servers, they fail fairly gracefully if they can't connect. So, if you have books on the device to read, it will be OK.

If you try the browser, it will does use kobo.com to verify the connection is up, but, recent firmware has a prompt to warn of this and asks if you want to continue the connection.

The only problem is if you realise that you forgot to buy or download that book you really, really wanted to read right now
