Those statistics were apples-and-oranges. Originally, they included downloads via Calibre, be they newly added or just an update for a new version.
Some years ago (2015?), Kovid changed the statistics to only be incremented for newly added plugins (not updates).
Obviously, if a user downloaded their original copy manually from MobileRead.com, it would never be comprehended in the statistics.
The only way to sift the apples from the oranges after 2015(?) was to take a checkpoint, and then later compare the latest statistics to arrive at a delta.
I luckily had taken a random checkpoint on 21 January 2020:
