The only thing I can think of is that how long it takes to correct the time might depend on how far off the time is.
For example, NTP tries to avoid jams and will slew, unless that will take "too long", in which case it will reluctantly jam. But if the jam amount is "too large", it gets suspicious and tries to figure some way to trust the reference time. In the case of decades it might take a long time.
Maybe the best advive for old cellular only kindles is to plug it into a chager and leave wireless on for a long time.
I must admit not understanding why, once jailbroken, some terminal application can not be intalled that will give access to the entire file system. I think on old kindles, the built in web browser cat read text files anywhere in the system. (That hole was plugged some time ago, but I don't know if it ever was on the DX.)
