Reboots usually fix odd behavior. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then wait as it reboots.

If the device is new, and you've downloaded a lot of books, the indexing process can chew up the battery and make the device "laggy."

I've been using Kindles since 2009, and reboots are the first thing to try when they misbehave.
