IIRC, 5.10.x was the start of things turning to shit.
So any 5.9.x should be a good choice AND we do have an add-in published here that allows the use of collections prior to registration. (possibly LONG prior).

There is a version of my BBB set of firewall rules for routers, etc. (somebody else here did it)
