The Aura was a very odd duck as far as how the eInk screen is handled, so I'm not entirely surprised you're encountering all kinds of weird bugs when hitting corner-cases like this.

(In fact, it's reported as sometimes actually *crashing* with hardware nightmode, especially on early FW versions).

That means I don't really have a nice solution for you, except switching to the standalone hack, setup in *software* mode. Which will be slow as molasses, but will probably work.
