This is a short thread, so far. As far as I'm concerned, many more posts to go.
Van Vogt was best in the shorter lengths. I have a big omnibus of his short stories from NESFA press.
Stories like
The Monster,
The Sound,
The Village,
Dear Pen Pal, and
Far Centarus, for example.
