I'm not considering wether it is children's book or an adult book; to me it looks like it could follow the original story fairly closely, and still be an appealing to all ages movie that would do very well at the box office.

FWIW, I reread The Hobbit recently, and enjoyed it much less than my previous read. Even so, I can imagine it would adapt very well to the screen.
