I tended to view The Hobbit movies kind of like the James Bond movies, i.e. the books and movies are very different entities. From that stand point, I rather liked the Hobbit movies. With the LOTR movies, changes to the books increased from movie to movie. Fellowship of the Rings was fairly close to the book, considering the different requirement for movies. Return of the King was totally different than the book with massive changes to some of the characters and events.
