This is the exact same issue I'm having. Explorer just hangs, but everything goes back to normal the second I unplug the Kindle. This is on a Vista Ultimate 64-bit machine. But I have second computer that is Vista Home Premium 64-bit and plugging the Kindle into the front USB port works just fine. The first machine has an ASUS motherboard and the second a Gigabyte... not sure if that has anything to do with this issue, just FYI.
