I think MobiPocket is an old and technically bad format for today's hardware. So it is perfectly understanding that they do not want to sell MobiPocket books since then they do not have the option of improving the format.
What they should have done was supporting ePub.

Mobipocket is the exact same format as AZW that they already use. There is no work at all to support that format and they would not need to raise the price. The only difference is in the DRM used with one obscure bit toggled in the database.
What they should have done is impossible to fix in the past. They didn't and while I think they should this is not a condition that has anything to do with this discussion technically. It wouldn't open the format to other DRM systems for dealers and it wouldn't solve the DRM problem with libraries, unless they paid Adobe to do it and that might raise the price.
