First Gen - Network error newbie

Hi everyone! I took in a lonesome 1st Gen who needed a good home. It was "factory reset". I immediately noticed that although I could browse the internet via the web tab, I can't operate either app store due to a "network error." A quick google search stated that at some point years ago there was a necessary update that would fix the issue (1.2.1), so I downloaded it and dropped it in the root folder. Went to settings and... saw it's actually on version 6.3.4?!

My question is what, if anything, can I do to make this bad boy connect to the app stores correctly. Technically I can use it without, but I'd really appreciate it if anyone knows how to fix this. Thanks!
