Unfortunately the USA Corporations want to keep extending copyright and making it retrospective. The US Government then makes it a condition of trade treaties. It's immoral and corporate greed. Generally the estates of the creator do not benefit.
Sure they do. The Margaret Mitchell estate, just as one example, still makes money in the US from the copyright of Gone with the Wind.

Retrospective does not mean what you think it means.
