Thanks for all the comments. I will have to wait until my dad actually gets the Kobo I shipped him and has a chance to try it out and see what he feels comfortable with doing, before deciding how to proceed.

One other question: I saw a web browser somewhere on the features of the device, but didn't think to play with it before packing it up to ship to him. Is it possible to download .epub files onto the Kobo that way, e.g. by pointing it at Project Gutenberg or a file transfer area on my own domain?
