There's nothing remotely hypocritical about being proud of having contributed to the early development of a service but finding it necessary to stop being one of those providers. It is rather unlikely the University in question has infinite resources, deciding that the resources they do have are best used elsewhere now that there are several alternatives to the service they helped initiate is not hypocritical or lazy. A gracious user would thank them for their previous service, not insult them for having decided they need to stop.
